Wah Lum Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu

What is Kung Fu?

Kung Fu is a Chinese Martial Art that has been in existence for over 4,000 years. Most traditional styles of Kung Fu are based on the natural movements of animals. Over time these styles were also adapted to the different challenges and characteristics of the regions where they flourished. The result has been the development of hundreds of styles, many as rich and profound in their philosophy and wisdom as they are effective in their martial applications.

History of Wah Lum Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu

grandmaster_db_small.pngLee-Kwan-Shan-Web.jpgThe Praying Mantis style of Kung Fu was created by Master Wong Long over 350 years ago in Shantung Province. Over the years several branches emerged, one being the Wah Lum Praying Mantis System, named for a temple in Jinan, China. A skillful martial artist studying there, Lee Kwan Shan, later combined his family style, Tam Tui (emphasizing strong leg movements) with the Wah Lum Praying Mantis to form a well-rounded, effective system known as Wah Lum Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu. Lee Kwan Shan's last disciple was a six year old boy named Chan Pui. It was Master Chan who brought this system to the United States.

Due to the tireless efforts of Master Chan there are now numerous sanctioned Wah Lum schools throughout the US as well as international schools in Europe and South America. All Wah Lum schools are run by instructors that have been personally certified by Master Chan to teach the Wah Lum style. In order to maintain the highest quality of instruction and to insure the proper preservation of the system, Master Chan requires all Wah Lum instructors to undergo recertification testing every three years.

Keeping tradition alive in a modern world...

Step into the extraordinary life of Pui Chan, a Chinese immigrant who overcame challenges in early childhood… and eventually made a life for himself.… One that would touch the lives of many others around the world. It all started with a simple dream… and today, the dream lives on. This family-authorized biography follows the path of a young boy who learns the value of hard work and perseverance through kung fu training, escapes the harshness of political oppression, bravely ventures out on his own, and embraces opportunity in a new land. Watch Pui Chan from the beginning, as an eager martial arts instructor in 1960s Boston, Massachusetts, open his own Kung Fu school, and start to spread the tradition, always maintaining the original fundamentals and values he learned as a boy.

Pui Chan would finally realize his dream of building the first authentic Chinese martial arts temple in America as a tribute to his kung fu master. The now highly recognized Grandmaster Pui Chan, 6th generation successor of the Wah Lum Kung Fu System, is one of the pioneers responsible for bringing traditional Kung Fu to America, and leads an internationally renowned martial arts school and system across the world.

Fifty years later, Pui Chan's eldest daughter and successor Mimi Chan confronts a new set of challenges, trying to keep the traditional values alive in an increasingly modernized era.

Narrated by Mimi Chan.
